What is nutrition, & Why is it important?



Nutrition is the key to good physical health and good mental health,
Good nutrition means getting the right amount of nutrients from healthy foods in the right combinations. The essential nutrients of life include;

▪Carbohydrates
▪Fats
▪Proteins
▪Water
▪Vitamins
▪Fiber
▪Minerals

Nutrition is the process of taking in nutrients from the foods you eat (you are what you eat).
The benefits of good nutrition include better immunity, better dental and bone health, and a more consistent energy level, without good nutrition you will feel sluggish with little to no energy.

Understanding nutrition is important because the food you ingest on a day-to-day basis will have a huge influence on how your body functions and feels. Applying good nutrition and physical activity habits in your day is essential to attaining a more healthier lifestyle. A unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity are leading global risks to health. Proper nutrition helps you develop and maintain good health,
good health is defined as a state of a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

The nutrition in certain foods can naturally increase your body’s oxygen levels, and eliminate many sources of toxins. Nutrition is all about choices, you must make good choices to achieve your goals for living a more healthier lifestyle.

How to incorporate good nutrition in your diet?

Drink Plenty of Water;
Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Drinking water regularly can help you to lose weight, think better, be in a better mood, and prevent disease, drinking water is vital for almost every function in the body.
Drinking water before, during, and after meals will help your body break down the food you eat more easily. This will help you digest food more effectively and get the most out of your meals.

Read Food Labels;
Food labels tell you the nutritional content of the food item. DVs (daily value percents) are based on a 2,000-calorie diet for healthy adults. Keep in mind, for nutrients you want to get less of, choose foods with a low % of DVs.
When reading food labels serving size is an important factor in your diet, If a package holds two servings and you eat the whole thing, you have eaten double all the numbers on the label. The larger your portions are, the more calories you eat. Also, Know your fats, Look for foods low in saturated and trans fats.

Avoid Frying;
Consuming fried foods has several negative health effects. Eating fried foods regularly may put you at risk of developing diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Eating fried foods (deep fried) is not a healthy choice. Fried foods add a lot of calories to food and don't offer any healthy nutrients.


Set Goals;
Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. When setting your health and fitness goals, remember to start slowly and set realistic goals. Setting bite-sized goals helps to attain those long-term goals.
Setting goals is very important, when you are on the journey to a healthier lifestyle.
People with goals succeed because they know where they're going.
When you start to feel, that the goals you have set cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust your action steps.

Get Your 5 A Day;
Getting your 5 a day can be tricky, most of us lack in at least 2 of the major food groups, mostly fruits and vegetables. Meal planning is a great way to keeping yourself accountable for get your 5 a day in.
